Holding over weekends and trading the news

Hold positions overnight and through weekends, and trade around news, on every market. One market closes at weekends, and gaps are real, so here is how both work.

All rules

Trading hours

Every market trades 24/7 except forex, which closes every weekend, from Friday 17:00 to Sunday 17:15 New York time. While it is closed its price is held at the last price before the close and orders in it are refused.

When a stock or commodity exchange is closed, Hyperliquid keeps pricing inside limits around its oracle, so prices still move, usually thinly, and can gap when the exchange reopens.

Gaps and stop-losses

  • A gap can cross a loss line. Holding is allowed, and so is the risk: if the price reopens past your daily loss line or maximum drawdown line, the account ends.
  • A stop-loss is not a guaranteed price. Across a gap it fills at the first price after it, not at its trigger.
  • Overnight positions and the daily reset. A floating loss held past 00:00 UTC is not charged to the next day, and a floating profit does not tighten it.

Trading the news

There is no news-trading restriction and no blackout around announcements. What protects every trader equally is execution: an order waits a random 120–200 ms and fills at the engine’s next price, and if the price moves more than 0.4% in between, the order is rejected instead, at no cost. If the price feed goes stale, the market freezes: nothing fills and nothing breaches on a price seen during an outage, and every freeze is on the status page.

Questions about holding and news

Is crypto open at weekends?

Yes. Crypto trades around the clock, every day.

What happens to an order in a closed market?

It is refused. While a market is closed its price is held at the last price before the close.

Is scalping allowed?

Any style is allowed: scalping, intraday or swing, long or short. What is not allowed is in prohibited conduct, such as exploiting a feed or latency error.
